The international communication capacity of universities is a vital component of a nation's cultural soft power. To accurately assess the current state of international communication capacity building in Jiangsu universities and to provide a basis for decision-making aimed at enhancing this capacity, the study constructs an assessment framework based on previous research and develops a survey questionnaire for empirical investigation. The findings reveal multiple challenges in Jiangsu universities' efforts to build international communication capacity: uneven development across regions and institutional levels, the need for optimization and upgrading of university websites, relatively weak overseas communication practices, and a lagging evaluation and feedback mechanism. Therefore, Jiangsu universities should strengthen regional collaboration, promote differentiated and distinctive development, accelerate digital transformation, flexibly enhance communication efficiency, integrate internal and external efforts to build a cohesive brand communication network, and scientifically construct an evaluation system to effectively self-assess international communication outcomes. This will provide a powerful impetus for the overall enhancement of China's international communication capacity.

A comparative analysis of female agency and the absence of father figures in Xianzu Tang and William Shakespeare's dramas
Jiaxing Nanhu University, China

This study offers a comparative analysis of female agency within the patriarchal structures of Xianzu Tang and William Shakespeare's works, focusing on the intersection of gender, power, and autonomy. By examining the portrayal of female initiative consciousness and the symbolic absence of father figures, the study highlights how these elements function as narrative devices that empower female protagonists in their marital decisions and personal fulfillment. The article explores how the absence of paternal figures serves to challenge traditional patriarchal authority, facilitating the daughters' independence and reinforcing their autonomy. In both Xianzu Tang and Shakespeare's plays, this absence is symbolic of the deconstruction of patriarchal control, allowing for the emergence of female initiative. The paper concludes by reflecting on the implications of these findings for understanding female agency in literature, and suggests directions for future research.

Shanghai Institute of Commerce & Foreign Language, China

With the advancement of globalization, pragmatic competence in English has become particularly important in the English learning of Chinese university students. However, there is a widespread deficiency in pragmatic competence among Chinese university students, urgently requiring effective methods for improvement and assessment. This article first defines pragmatic competence and its components, analyzing the limitations of existing teaching methods. It then proposes various enhancement strategies, including task-based learning, role-playing and simulations, cultural immersion activities, the use of multimedia technologies, and feedback and reflection practices. The article also explores assessment methods such as formative assessment, summative assessment, performance-based assessment, and self- and peer-assessment. Furthermore, it constructs an implementation framework that integrates curriculum design, teacher training, resource allocation, and monitoring and assessment to address challenges such as resource constraints, resistance to teaching reforms, and differences in student proficiency levels. Finally, the article emphasizes the numerous benefits of improving pragmatic competence in communication skills, academic and professional development, and cultural understanding, urging educational institutions to actively adopt the recommended methods to promote the comprehensive enhancement of pragmatic competence in Chinese university students.
